Patricia and Robert Spencer came here many years ago after previously owning and managing two larger holiday businesses, , and at both ,the Spencers built a wonderful reputation for serving consistently fine food, morning and evening:, gaining a reputation also for the friendliness of their welcome and the way in which they cared for their guests, thus explaining why many of them are still returning to Applebarn now as friends some thirty years later.
What is their secret? Many people have asked. It’s Simple. They love people, and Patricia loves to cook.
She trained as a chef at Wulfrun college, West Midlands. Many accolades to their good food and caring attention to guests can be found on Sawday’s special places website, where they have been recommended for many years. Robert, a farmer’s son and ex butcher, excels at choosing the very best quality produce for guests to enjoy. Local grass fed meat and organic poultry, fish fresh as can be from the sea, locally caught, and vegetables, organic and locally produced, all made into innovative dishes, lovingly prepared and served.
Bob’s humour and personality too, are greatly appreciated by guests.
The menus change daily, and special diets can be accommodated with a little notice. The Spencers invite people to enjoy a complimentary aperitif in their 17th century dining hall each evening, where they can choose a starter before dining at separate tables by candlelight.
The cottage enjoys superb views from every window, and though only four guests can be accommodated in two pretty suites there is conviviality and a relaxed ambience, with Patricia and Bob often joining their guests for coffee after dinner.
Not to be overlooked! Breakfast is also a special meal. Fresh eggs and honey from near neighbours and a farmhouse breakfast freshly prepared with the aid of their famous Aga! Plenty of other choices too.
